I use email to send messages from my unit to cell phones. How is SMS different?
With
SkyTel Inter-Carrier SMS, SkyTel customers can now originate text messages using phone number only addressing. You simply enter the recipient's 10-digit phone number as the recipient's
email address in your unit's address book. SkyTel customers will be able to send, receive and reply to messages from
SMS-enabled cell phone customers quickly and
easily.

How does the service work?
SkyTel communicates with a third-party provider via the SkyTel WCTP Gateway. The provider receives messages from SkyTel addressed with simple phone numbers, and routes them to the proper carrier based on a quick look-up in a hosted wireless directory database.
Customers of other wireless carriers who have connections to the service provider will also be able to send messages to SkyTel customers simply by addressing the message to a SkyTel 10-digit Personal Access Number. The provider will route the message to SkyTel for delivery to the SkyTel customer.
